Hello Prof Kochhar!

Thanks for the information. So Kumbh is Sanakrit for Aquarius!

Now, NASA's web site gives 11.863 years as the time Jupiter takes to go
round the sun. From my calculations, this is around 50 days short of 12
years. Am I missing something here? Are there other astronomical
phenomena to be taken into account here?

Kind Regards,

Jamal

the mela commemorates Jupiter's return to the same place in the sky.

Hello Manish!

Thank you for this.

What set me thinking along these lines was the Chinese monk-pilgrim
Zuanzang's (Huen Sang's) account of the Buddhist king Harsha Vardhana
attending the Kumbh Mela regularly (in the 7th Centuary). Also, we have,
nearby, the ancient site of Kaushambi, birthplace of the sixth
Tirthankar and, therefore, a holy place for Jains (please correct me if
I am wrong), as it is also a holy place for Buddhists on account of the
many visits Buddha is said to made there. So I thought may be in earlier
times the mela held some significance for these other major religions
too.

Kind Regards,

Jamal

> Hi,
>
> my colleague Kristina Roepstorff and I, we are seeking other scholars to
> join our panel "India as a humanitarian actor: newbie or old hand?" for
> the upcoming BASAS conferences in Leeds in April 2013.
>
> Please see the following panel abstract:
>
> "India is generally regarded a major recipient of humanitarian and
> development assistance. Recent studies and analyses however draw attention
> to Indias growing importance as humanitarian actor. While still being a
> recipient of development assistance, India increasingly plays an active
> part in humanitarian assistance by channeling funds through multilateral
> organizations and by contributing to policy discussions and innovations.
> At the same time, and in light of the financial crises, traditional donors
> welcome the increasing involvement of non-traditional donors in
> humanitarian assistance.
> Highlighting the shift from recipient to donor, these studies more often
> than not portray India as a new player in the field of humanitarian
> assistance. While Indias engagement in humanitarian assistance has
> certainly taken a new dimension over the last decade, characterized among
> other things by a growing involvement at the international level, Indias
> history and practice of humanitarian assistance has yet to be studied
> systematically. Taking an interdisciplinary and diachronic approach, the
> panel thus explores Indias role in humanitarian assistance from the
> beginning of the 20th century until today. Placing Indias role in
> humanitarian assistance within the broader historical and political
> context, the panel addresses questions regarding the emergence of
> humanitarianism in India, the nature and geographical allocation pattern
> of humanitarian aid over time, and compares Indias role as humanitarian
> actor in the past and present."
>
> We are particular interested in papers dealing with the history of India's
> humanitarian action in the period 1945-1990.
>
> If you are interested, please send us an email or an abstract (150-200
> words). The deadline is 5 Dec. 2013.

> Shingainen (from the Japanese for new concept) is a new peer-reviewed
> journal that engages with the ever-progressing,
> yet-to-be-solidly-defined concept of the Asia-Pacific. We will feature
> pieces that attempt to either solve problems facing those who would
> aim for a peaceful Asia-Pacific order beneficial to all its residents,
> recognize the existence of such a problem, or define concepts needed
> to move forward with the foregoing. We are interested in politics, but
> in the broad sense, that is, social relations involving power. We will
> not strictly limit ourselves to political science methods, and strive
> for an open, interdisciplinary approach.
>
> Articles are accepted in English or Japanese, and will be presented
> with an accompanying abstract in the other language (translated by our
> translation team). Shingainen is thus the ideal forum for those
> wishing to reach Japan/the outside world (as the case may be) without
> (at least at first) leaving the native-language comfort zone. As
> resources allow, we plan to extend this treatment further to abstracts
> in Chinese (in the print version), and, on our website, in all the
> major languages of the region.
>
> The journal accepts four types of submissions. Word counts are
> inclusive of endnotes but not reference lists:
>
> Research manuscripts of up to 6,000 words;
>
> Research notes manuscripts of up to 3,000 words seeking specifically
> to advance a new idea, perspective, or approach;
>
> Book reviews of up to 1,000 words;
>
> Review essays that critique a line of argument rather than any one
> piece in particular. They are not to exceed 4,000 words.
>
> All submissions must be accompanied by a brief biographical sketch of
> up to 50 words and, except for book reviews, an abstract of up to 200
> words.
>
> Manuscripts will be accepted on a rolling basis until March 1, 2013.
>

10,000 articles now in the open access Pauly-Wissowa

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 04:25 PM PST

The Open Access Pauly-Wissowa Realencyclopaedie has reached the milestone of ten thousand articles, nearly all of them proof-read and interlinked.

See the press release:

(JG, 29.11.)
